Designing and building a lightweight adventure motorcycle in the world of overweight and bloated adventure bikes. With a specific spec sheet and some ideas on what parts to source we begin the journey to two wheeled nirvana.
Yamaha and KTM parts fit the bill for quality, weight limits and dimensions. Yamaha has provided the power-plant in the wonderful CP2 engine, found in the MT07, FZ07, XSR700 and now the Tenere 700. This twin cylinder, 700 cc, 270 degree crank engine has all the right specs and power for this project. It also sounds fantastic! I created a 3D model of this engine in Fusion 360 to aide in the design process.

The KYB SSS forks from the Yamaha YZF450F were also selected because of their over quality and tune-ability. The 3D model for these was also created in Fusion 360.

Rounding out the rear are parts from KTM. Specifically the KTM 690 Enduro R. This bike is the closest I could find to overall spec I was looking for, so the rear suspension seemed to fit the bill. The swing arm is wide enough to locate the centerline of the bike optimally with the engine so the mass is balanced. Also, KTM makes quality parts. These models were measured with custom made jigs and modeled in Fusion 360.
